|
|
I'm trying to build up a little bit of a collection of paper-type shonen-ai (so much easier to read in bed). So far I'm collecting -FAKE- and Zesty! but I'd love recommendations if you know any good shonen-ai series (or one-shots) to collect. I prefer fluff over angst and a well-written story is always going to be a win. Any suggestions? _________________ *dances*

That doesn't sound very encouraging...
Did it get boring or something? _________________ *dances*

Ah.
None of the bookshops in my region even sell manga, but I'm gonna go visit my sister in Sydney in a few weeks, so I'm gonna hit the book and comic shops when I'm there, only I'm hesitant about buying books and things that I don't know if I'll like, that's why I asked for recomendations. I'll have to look into 'Gravitation' and see what it's like. _________________ *dances*

I enjoyed Gravitation. I thought it was really cute. I also like Loveless. I'm really hooked on that. I also liked Passion, Yellow (this is more yaoi than shonen-ai), Little Butterfly (slightly angsty but still really cute), and Our Kingdom. _________________ I love deadlines. I read the 'Loveless' wiki the other day - sounds a little shota-ish to me, would that be correct? I'm not fond of shota.
I'll look up the others too. *must write these down*

Loveless is kinda hard to explain. I guess it is shota. The main character is 12 yrs old and his fighter unit is in college. They kiss from time to time and the older character Soubi insinuates that he wants to sleep with Ritsuka (the 12yr old) but it hasn't gone past that. When they kiss, it's not like a real kiss, at least according to my theory why they kiss. I think it has something to do with talking power from each other. Sounds weird, I know. But that's what I am getting from it.
You also forget that Ritsuka is 12 because he is really mature for his age throughout most of the book. You only notice his real age on occasion. I keep forgetting how old he is probably because of the way he acts and because I read manga with a lot of older characters. I don't notice it.
People may think you are reading porn if they saw Yellow. They don't really show details but there are quite a bit of sex scenes. I mainly liked the overall story because you know that these guys are in love but one just won't admit it.
Now that I think about it. Both of these are full of angst too. Loveless shows Ritsuka's mom beating him plus a lot of fighting and there is a heavy past issue in Yellow along with fighting, guns, and blood.
But I can't help but like them. The stories are fairly original and the artwork is amazing. _________________ I love deadlines. I especially love the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by.

Thanks for the explanations. I think I'll leave those two alone though, not sure I could really separate myself from the whole 'he's a kid dammit!' with 'Loveless', even if it wasn't 'real' kissing. And I've got a kinda weird attitude when it comes to yaoi/things with sex scenes. Sometimes I like 'em and the rest of the time I'm all 'please, no sex, geez do we really need to see this?' - doesn't matter what the story is, it just comes down to my mood, and like I said before I don't want people picking 'em up having a 'hzxfgk! You read porn!' reaction. So yeah, gonna steer away from printed yaoi.
Which leads me to this: I looked up the other stories you recommended and several of them have graphic content warnings on the covers. So are they yaoi or are the publishers just uber-paranoid?
And thanks Yolin, I might look out for 'Hands Off!' while I'm in Sydney, sounds like it could be an interesting story.
And and: I'm gonna completely show myself up with the whole 'no angst please' issue by pointing you all here: http://www.breath.se/home.htm
It's a really well written story with beautiful art (well, mostly) and characters that you can really care about (or want to beat to a bloody pulp). Heck, I can't even complain about the (sorta) sex scene, simply because it was so well done. Not sure it really counts as either shonen-ai or yaoi, it's just a story which happens to centre around m/m romance - see and now you all look at me like I'm talking nonsense, but it made sense to me. _________________ *dances*

My turn to recommend stuff! One of the series I picked up while I was away (I bought so many books, most of them manga) is 'Off*beat' which is really cute (well, I think it is anyway) - it's about a couple of teenage boys, Tory and Colin, who don't seem to have figured out yet that they're attracted to each other - I'm pretty sure their friend Mandy has though. Their obliviousnes is cute. There's only two books out so far, so I'm waiting for the rest. A proper description and a freebee peek at the first few chapters is available here. _________________ *dances*
